How to exercise when you’re on holiday

Image
By: Victoria  Hall , beauty editor  While we might spend the weeks- or months for the hardcore among us- leading up to a beach holiday at the gym and carefully monitoring every calorie and carb that passes our lips, once we’re in our bikini lying on the sun lounger any thought of exercise is usually brushed aside. But, should we be working out when we’re away and is it as hard as we think to squeeze it in? We asked the experts for their top tips…    CREDIT: FACEBOOK / VICTORIA SPORT Start early “Get your exercise done in the morning, so you can enjoy the rest of the day,” says fitness expert  Toby Huntington-Whiteley . “When I’m on holiday I try not to worry about exercising too much as I like to give my body a break. Instead, I’ll try and do regenerative work, such a local yoga class or go for a swim before breakfast.” Trainer  Lee Mullins  echos this approach, “I'm a big advocate of doing different activities from what you...

This Woman Reads 100 Books In A Month (And How You Can Too) Last month, Therese embarked on a challenge to read 100 nonfiction titles with the Blinkist app. Here's how she did.

Meet Therese, she’s a business development manager living in Berlin, Germany. Last month, she managed to read over 100 nonfiction titles in psychology, politics and leadership. It started with a bet. A colleague challenged her to read Malcolm Gladwell’s Outliers: The Story Of Success in two hours. As determined as she was, she couldn’t meet the deadline. She got through the first few chapters relatively quickly but found it impossible to finish the book in the designated 2 hours. Although she lost the bet, she had an idea. “I want to read more nonfiction books—I find it really useful to read the key takeaways from lots of books to help me get a feeling for what’s an absolute must for my to-read list!” She found several websites, blogs and apps that transform books into ‘bite-sized’ content. In the end, she opted for the Blinkist app. As one of the first services to condense nonfiction books into quick reads, the Blinkist app has 1,50...

VIVINO APP

Image
This app is designed to turn anyone into a wine expert By Katy Scott Heini Zachariassen never quite understood wine. He would go to the supermarket to pick out a bottle, but was often at a loss when confronted with the inevitable "wall of wine." It bothered him -- so he set out to build an app that catalogs, organizes and ranks millions of bottles. "We had a problem that needed solving: I want to drink better wine but I don't know s**t about wine," said Zachariassen. Seven years and 25 million downloads later, the Vivino app that Zachariassen created is used by a community of casual drinkers who have reviewed and rated nearly 12 million bottles of wine. Users snap a photo of a wine label with their phone, and the app will return user ratings, the average retail price, tasting notes and recommended food pairings. It also works on restaurant wine lists. To date, Vivino users have scanned nearly 425 million labels and given 72 million ratings. "We real...

How to Resolve Disputes: All it Takes is One Simple Skill (OK, Strike “Simple”) By  Christine Funk   Disputes within a company, either between two individuals or between rival teams or departments, can quickly turn into internal fights that are bad for everyone involved. If you want to help resolve them, you need to do something that is much harder than it sounds: You need to listen actively.    You can only help people resolve their conflicts if you understand the nature of those conflicts and their underlying interests and motives. This requires sound active listening skills – and as you will see, this is much more complex than you might think.   How the “active” bit in “active listening” makes all the difference Listening can take place with various levels of depth, intensity, comprehension, and empathy. And if you think you know how to listen actively, we invite you to do this little self-assessment: When you find yourself listening to someone in the ...

Christ the center of it all

CHRIST IS THE KEY Written by Pastor Bankie Every puzzle has a key. We have read again and again the story of the young girl who was distracting the dad, a pastor, as he was busy preparing his sermon for the next day. He decided to solve the problem by keeping the little girl busy with a puzzle. He took a picture of the globe, tore it into small pieces and told the little girl to arrange it back into order. That should take a long time, he thought. But the little girl was done in minutes, to the astonishment of daddy. How did you manage to get it done so fast, he asked. It was pretty easy, she said. See, there's is a picture of a man on the back of the sheet. I figured that if the man is put right, the world on the other side would be right. The girl knew the parts of a man well, and so was done in a few minutes. The moral of the story? Every puzzle has a key. 'The Scriptures' is a big puzzle, and it needs a key. It is not easy at all to decode it. We easily  se...

Change-We Want It, But Resist It: by Karen Liebenguth

Image
Everything is changing all of the time – for better and for worst. Change happens continuously and consistently in each and everyone’s life, at work and at home and yet, most of us resist change. Why?    What stops us from relaxing into change and enjoying what comes next? Most of the time it is fear. Fear of the unknown, fear of failure, fear of our own potential, fear of rejection. We like to hang on to what is known and familiar. We like to stay in our comfort zone because it’s safe; it gives us security; it protects us from failure and rejection – the very things many of us fear most. While this can be a good thing, it can also leave us feeling stuck or stagnant in life, and when we suppress our inherent need to grow as a person, we can begin to experience low mood, anxiety and even depression.   Change – an intrinsic part of life The purpose of life is to  unfold our full potential , to expand our comfort zone into ever widen...
